Official information takes precedence. This is an independent explanatory guide, not military recruitment advice, medical clearance or a guarantee of success. Follow the source for your actual role and selection stage.

What the CPC is for

The Candidate Preparation Course offers a structured introduction to the Royal Marines' training environment and helps assess readiness for subsequent stages. Official descriptions cover fitness, swimming and other requirements.

Candidates should refer to the joining instructions for the precise schedule, kit and testing conditions. Independent sources may describe course duration inconsistently.

Why older accounts conflict

Recruitment formats change. Personal blogs, forum posts and training videos can still be useful context, but they don't override the official information applicable to your intake.

If two official pages describe the course differently, contact your recruiter rather than assuming the longest or shortest description is current.

Prepare for a full process

Fitness alone is not the entire story. Follow official swimming, medical and administrative guidance. Training more aggressively in the final week cannot substitute for a longer period of appropriate preparation.

What the Royal Marines CPC actually assesses

The dedicated Royal Navy CPC page describes the Candidate Preparation Course as an introduction to life at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines, Lympstone. Its publicly listed components include the multistage fitness test, press-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, swimming and assessments of confidence and determination. This is not simply another isolated bleep test.

Candidates should also distinguish what the official website says about a course from what their joining instructions require at a particular intake. Public descriptions can change; your recruiter and current joining documents determine what you should pack, where to report and which tests apply.

Why do official pages disagree about CPC duration?

An important detail in October 2026: the Royal Marines main joining-process overview describes CPC as a four-day induction, while the dedicated CPC page describes a five-day course. These are both Royal Navy pages. Instead of silently choosing whichever number sounds more definite, we recommend checking the precise timing with your recruitment contact.

This is a good example of the limits of independently published preparation sites. Even an official source can present a different description depending on when a page was updated or which stage it summarises. Preparation should follow the instructions for your booked course, not an unverified blog's itinerary.

Swimming: understand the official expectation without recreating it unsafely

The dedicated Royal Navy CPC guidance discusses swimming and water-confidence assessments, including a swim, treading water and leaving the pool. It sets out details of clothing and permitted equipment that candidates should check directly. Do not attempt an unfamiliar water-confidence drill alone or copy a military training video in an unsupervised pool.

If water confidence is a weakness, a qualified swimming instructor can help assess technique and build competence progressively. Swimming skill does not automatically transfer from running fitness; a fast two-kilometre runner can still have gaps in swimming technique and water safety.

Practical CPC preparation checklist

Use the preparation window to eliminate avoidable uncertainty rather than chase unofficial pass-rate claims. Verify the next stage, read the latest official preparation programme, check travel and reporting requirements, and build a repeatable routine that includes adequate rest. Ask your adviser which requirements are assessed at CPC and which belong to the subsequent Recruit Orientation Phase.

  • Confirm course duration and arrival instructions with the current recruitment team.
  • Read the official CPC page and the associated fitness-preparation materials.
  • Practise swimming only in a suitable supervised environment.
  • Avoid internet-specific training challenges that do not correspond to published requirements.
