The test a Royal Navy applicant is actually preparing for
The Royal Navy calls its aptitude assessment the Defence Aptitude Assessment (DAA). Its recruiting site lists six multiple-choice skill tests, not the British Army Cognitive Test. Searches for 'Navy aptitude test', 'RN recruitment test' and 'RAF DAA' can therefore produce overlapping explanations that do not always state which service's instructions control the process.
Start with the Royal Navy's own DAA familiarisation, not a third-party claim that unofficial question formats or scores duplicate the real test. The Royal Navy's practice tool illustrates the actual formats and section timing in ways an independent educational site cannot guarantee.
Project Selection offers general reasoning exercises for additional study. These are original practice questions, not copies of Crown-owned test content, not official DAA marks and not a role-eligibility calculator.
How the Royal Navy describes online assessment access
The Royal Navy's official DAA instructions say an assessment link arrives in the candidate portal and remains valid for fourteen days. A candidate may choose when to start within that window, but once started the assessment must be completed in one sitting. Candidates may also arrange to attend a local Armed Forces Careers Office rather than taking it at home.
The service says the actual assessment should be taken on a screen of at least 10.2 inches. That screen requirement belongs to the official assessment; this independent site's short learning drills are designed to work on mobile as well.
These details are published guidance, not a guarantee that every applicant's portal, technical requirements or accessibility arrangements will be identical. Read the actual invitation carefully and contact the recruiting service if something is unclear.
Six published skill areas—and why section names matter
The Royal Navy names verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, work rate, spatial reasoning, mechanical comprehension and electrical comprehension. Their official explanations distinguish interpreting text, handling numbers, completing straightforward tasks accurately, manipulating spatial representations and understanding everyday physical or electrical principles.
Our free practice bank covers these broad abilities through independently constructed multiple-choice examples and on-device generated variants. The exercise layouts, difficulty and timers do not recreate the protected official assessment. Results from our tool must never be converted into official trade scores or job eligibility.
- Verbal reasoning: read a claim carefully and decide what is supported by the given information.
- Numerical reasoning: work with ordinary ratios, percentages and basic arithmetic.
- Work rate: apply a simple pattern or rule accurately under self-imposed practice time.
- Spatial reasoning: follow orientation or shape transformations without assuming a specific official question style.
- Mechanical comprehension: reason through basic forces and everyday mechanisms.
- Electrical comprehension: read simple circuit principles as general science learning.
Start with the free Royal Navy familiarisation
The official DAA page offers familiarisation exercises across all six areas, and the test page warns explicitly about Crown copyright. That means independent coaches and websites should not reproduce official questions, imagery or proprietary answer layouts to appear authentic.
Use the official practice first to understand instructions, time limits and screen layout. Then use independent exercises to practise the underlying ordinary maths, reading, work rate and spatial reasoning. If an unofficial example feels unlike official familiarisation, treat it as a supplementary educational puzzle, not an indicator that the Royal Navy has changed its test.
A workable learning loop without fabricated marks
Use one short session to identify a general topic that feels slow or unfamiliar. Work through a few original examples, read the explanations and say aloud why the correct answer follows. Return to that topic several days later before attempting another mixed session.
Our free aptitude revision planner generates seven-, fourteen- or twenty-eight-day study schedules with varied topic coverage. Those durations are educational scheduling options, not a recommended Navy training programme or a prediction of readiness. Your actual official assessment date always overrides a generated calendar.
The purpose of repetition is to remember a useful reasoning method. Doing an unofficial practice round quickly cannot certify that a particular Royal Navy career is available to you. Eligibility, assessment scores and decisions remain with the service.
DAA, Royal Marines and the Army ACT: avoid route confusion
Royal Marines applicants also encounter the Defence Aptitude Assessment in the Royal Marines joining process, but then proceed through their own interview and physical selection pathway. The DAA does not substitute for the separate Royal Marines Pre-Joining Fitness Assessment or Candidate Preparation Course.
The British Army describes an Army Cognitive Test (Verifier), which is not simply the Royal Navy DAA under a different name. If you are unsure which assessment applies to your route, visit the official careers material for that service rather than purchasing a generic 'military aptitude' mock test.
For the Royal Navy's own details, use the DAA source linked at the bottom of this guide. Project Selection's pathway finder links the public service starting points without asking for your identity.
Frequently asked Royal Navy DAA questions
Is the official assessment timed? Yes: the Royal Navy states that each of the six parts is timed. The exact live instructions and timings are authoritative; our practice timer is an optional study aid.
Is a phone suitable? The Royal Navy says the actual test must use a screen of at least 10.2 inches, even though practice material can be explored on a phone.
Does an unofficial percentage tell me which jobs I qualify for? No. Role requirements and formal DAA scoring are determined by the Royal Navy.
Can I use free practice? Yes. Use the Navy's own familiarisation first and then independent reasoning practice if it is helpful. No purchase is necessary to access the official material.
Try a relevant calculator or general practice exercise when it helps clarify this topic. No account, payment or official recruitment score is involved.
